Little How (Japanese name: ぽちっと えほん) is a science picture book app that answers touch with sound and motion. Here you will find how to use it and answers to common questions.
1. About the app
- Four books are open from the start (Lights Go Flash! / Mix, Mix, Colors! / Boom-Boom Sounds / Gaps and Snug Fits).
- More books come in eight packs of four books each, or all at once with “All Packs” (in-app purchase, one-time payment).
- There are no ads, and no account is needed.
- You do not need an internet connection to read the books (except when buying or restoring purchases).
- Use the app in portrait orientation.
- The books can be read in 11 languages: Japanese, English, Spanish, Korean, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), French, German, Portuguese (Brazil), Italian and Indonesian. The app follows your device’s language, and you can also change it in Settings (after the adult check).
- Supported OS: iOS / iPadOS 15.0 or later, Android 7.0 or later.
2. How to use it
- Tap a cover on the shelf to open a book.
- Tap the large arrows at the bottom of the screen to turn the pages.
- To go back to the shelf, press and hold the house icon at the top left for a moment (about 0.6 seconds). This keeps children from leaving a book by accident while they play.
- The last page has the buttons “Again!”, “Bookshelf” and “For grown-ups”.
3. Frequently asked questions
A “For grown-ups” screen with an addition problem appears
This adult check keeps children from changing settings or making purchases. Enter the answer to the addition problem with the number pad and tap “OK”. If the answer is wrong, a new problem appears. To cancel, tap the “×” at the top right.
The check appears when you tap a cover with a lock (before the purchase screen), when you open Settings, and when you open “For grown-ups” at the end of a book.
There is no sound
- Open Settings with the gear icon at the top right of the shelf (after the adult check) and make sure “Sound” is on.
- Turn up the volume on your device.
- On iPhone and iPad, there is no sound while silent mode is on.
I want to turn off the vibration
Open Settings with the gear icon at the top right of the shelf (after the adult check) and turn off “Vibration”. Some devices do not vibrate at all.
I want to change the language
Open Settings with the gear icon at the top right of the shelf (after the adult check), tap “Language”, and choose a language. The app reloads when you choose.
At first, the app follows your device’s language. You can choose from 11 languages: Japanese, English, Spanish, Korean, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), French, German, Portuguese (Brazil), Italian and Indonesian.
I tap a cover with a lock and an addition problem appears
A cover with a lock belongs to an extra pack. When you tap it, the adult check (an addition problem) appears first. After you answer, the purchase screen opens, with the contents and price of the pack and the buttons “Buy” and “Restore Purchases”. If you do not want to buy, tap “Close”. The shelf your child sees shows no prices or purchase buttons.
What is “All Packs”?
It unlocks every pack, including packs added later, with a single purchase (one-time payment). The purchase screen of a pack shows an introduction and the price. If the books do not open after you buy it, tap “Restore Purchases”.
A pack I bought will not open, or the locks came back after I changed devices
Tap “Restore Purchases”. The button is in two places (both open after the adult check).
- The purchase screen that opens when you tap a cover with a lock
- Settings, opened with the gear icon at the top right of the shelf
You need to be signed in to the same store account you used to buy. Restoring needs an internet connection. On iPhone and iPad, you may be asked for your password.
Can my family use it (Family Sharing)?
Packs and “All Packs” bought on the App Store support Family Sharing. They open as purchased on the devices of family members in your Family Sharing group. If one does not open, tap “Restore Purchases” on that device.
I see “Waiting for approval from a family organizer. Once approved, the books will open.”
The purchase needs a parent’s approval on your child’s account (for example, “Ask to Buy” on the App Store). Once a parent approves it, the pack unlocks even if the app is still open. If it is not approved, the pack stays locked and nothing is charged.
I bought something by mistake / I want a refund
Payments are handled by the app store (the App Store or Google Play), so each store accepts and decides refund requests. Please request one from your purchase history in that store. We do not receive any payment information, so we cannot issue refunds directly. A pack that has been refunded is locked again.
Do you collect my child’s information?
No. The app has no ads and no outside analytics tools. All it stores is the settings and the list of purchased packs on your device. It uses the internet only for purchases and restores through the app store. For details, see the Privacy Policy (in Japanese).
I want to start over from the beginning
When you turn back to a page, it returns to its starting state. Tap “Again!” at the end of a book to read it again from page 1.
